VMware Tanzu Application Service is a mission-critical platform enabling enterprises to deliver their applications faster with a secure path to production based on Cloud Foundry. A core tenet of the platform is enabling developers with a rapid path to production for their applications and the services their applications consume, such as a database, message queue, or cache. Developers can select the appropriate combination of services to bind to their applications via the catalog defined in their Tanzu Application Service marketplace.
Today, we are pleased to announce the launch of VMware Postgres for VMware Tanzu Application Service. This VMware Postgres for Tanzu Application Service solution enables platform engineers to expand their existing Tanzu Application Service marketplace offerings with the popular database platform so developers can easily spin up Postgres databases on demand, just like they would with any existing service within the marketplace. Additionally, platform engineers can continue to wrap best practices around these database deployments to enable developers to focus on writing code versus dealing with infrastructure management.
Let’s dive into some key features that are now available in VMware Postgres for Tanzu Application Service:
Easy database consumption with service bindings – Developers writing applications on Tanzu Application Service can use the familiar service binding process to inject Postgres database information into applications automatically. Developers can focus on writing code instead of managing database credentials and connection strings.
Secured database credentials with CredHub – Platform engineers can enable service plans that automatically store sensitive data like credentials in the platform’s embedded secret store, CredHub. Developers can rest assured because their database credentials can be automatically encrypted, managed, and injected into their applications without having to worry about integrating a third-party secret store.
On-demand, highly available Postgres deployments – Developers can deploy highly available Postgres deployments within their Tanzu Application Service marketplace within minutes. Developers and platform engineers can rest assured their organization can use VMware Postgres for Tanzu Application Service for applications that need highly available database deployments.
Secure by default – Platform engineers can choose which TLS versions are offered within their service plans to help developers ensure their applications are using the appropriate TLS encryption when communicating with their databases.
BOSH-managed databases – Developers and platform engineers will benefit from databases deployed via BOSH, from secure golden base images known as stemcells. Tedious tasks, such as operating system and database updates, can be automated within the existing framework of Tanzu Application Service. Automated backups can also be configured to be managed and maintained by BOSH, rather than leaving it up to individual development or platform teams to manage their backups.
Streamlined metrics and log management – Platform engineers can use their existing workflows for the Tanzu Application Service ecosystem to capture logs and metrics generated from databases created from the VMware Postgres for Tanzu Application Service tile.
Cornerstone of private AI with Tanzu Application Service
To assist the exploration of private AI workloads running on Tanzu Application Service, VMware Postgres for Tanzu Application Service now has the ability to support custom database extensions. Most notably, pgvector has been added to enable support for embeddings for applications interacting with large language models (LLMs).
