Announcing Commitment Discount Recommendations for All AWS Reservable Services in VMware Tanzu CloudHealth

April 18, 2024 Dan Naparstek

At the heart of VMware Tanzu CloudHealth’s capabilities is a commitment to help our customers and partners gain visibility into cloud spend while optimizing cloud cost and usage through the purchase of commitment discounts for cloud service providers. To that end, we are extremely excited to announce a significant expansion in these capabilities with the General Availability of AWS Commitment Discount Recommendations, which provides  recommendations for all reservable services in AWS.

See recommendations for purchasing Reserved Instances for all reservable resource types that AWS offers

With this new feature set customers can now see recommendations for purchasing Reserved Instances for all reservable resource types that AWS offers. This feature brings coverage for additional resources, including Redshift, ElastiCache, OpenSearch, and DynamoDB, to existing coverage for EC2 and RDS. You can see an aggregate view of recommendations for all of the accounts that you have access to while taking advantage of Tanzu CloudHealth’s FlexOrgs feature. All recommendations are generated by Tanzu CloudHealth’s own algorithms based on your set criteria and cloud usage characteristics. You can filter to a specific service, evaluation period, payment type, payment term, or region. The dashboard shows the amount of savings opportunities a user can consider, as well as details for the associated upfront costs and projected monthly and yearly savings.

Each recommendation can be expanded to view more granular details to gain visibility into  how the recommendation was generated and the coverage it will offer. By reviewing the utilization chart within each specific recommendation, you can confidently understand why the reservation recommendation makes sense based on the past usage period that you have defined. Recommendations can be regenerated and exported to CSV for use outside of the platform.

Existing tools within Tanzu CloudHealth offer additional capabilities for AWS EC2 and RDS. For example, Tanzu CloudHealth can evaluate your AWS EC2 and RDS instances to determine if you can benefit from using reserved instances. More advanced features are available for AWS EC2, including tools to modify existing RIs or exchange Convertible RIs if more favorable options are available.

As a Certified FinOps Platform, Tanzu CloudHealth provides a solution that aligns with the FinOps Framework and provides support across domains and capabilities. The addition of recommendations for all AWS reservable services complements existing s support for recommendations for all Azure reservable services and tools to recommend and automate the purchase of AWS Savings Plans. Now Tanzu CloudHealth helps you ensure that you are optimizing cloud rates across your multi-cloud environment.
