Tanzu Platform offers customers a rich set of data service offerings as part of the platform. Core data services included in Tanzu Platform, such as MySQL, Postgres, RabbitMQ, and ValKey (Open Source Fork of Redis), offer enterprise-grade fleet management, security, and disaster recovery capabilities.
Customers can expect the same services, features, and benefits in VMware Tanzu Platform for Cloud Foundry, formerly known as Tanzu Application Service. Tanzu Platform continues to be a secure runtime environment with reduced risk and little to no platform downtime. Platform engineering and development teams can continue to boost their efficiencies while not having to spend time troubleshooting in the platform while continuing to focus on writing quality code.
In this blog, we focus on the latest enhancements to Tanzu Postgres for Cloud Foundry v1.2.0 with Postgresql v15 engine and what benefits customers can expect.
Faster backup with less disk space requirements
Incremental backup using pgBackRest copies only those database cluster files that have changed since the last backup (which can be a prior incremental, differential, or a full backup). Customers can leverage incremental backups and benefit from smaller backup duration and backup artifacts. As a side note, Incremental backups depend on prior backups to be valid for a successful restore.
Developers can restore instances with one command using adbr
A popular cf cli plugin, adbr is now compatible with the latest version of the Tanzu Postgres for Cloud Foundry tile. The acronym ADBR (after which the plugin was named) stands for “Application Data Backup and Restore.” This plugin can be used by application developers to list previous backups, perform on-demand backups, and get backup status. Since adbr also supports streaming replication, backups of large databases can be performed without consuming persistent disk space.
Run AI/ML workloads on Tanzu Postgres with Pgvector
Pgvector is an open-source PostgreSQL extension that provides vector similarity search capabilities. With the upgrade to version 0.7.2, the following functions are now available in Tanzu Postgres for Cloud Foundry instances-

- hamming_distance function
- jaccard_distance function
- l2_normalize function
- subvector function
- concatenate operator for vectors
