VMware Tanzu Application Service Delivers Exceptional Value with Extended Spring Runtime Support

July 28, 2023 Nick Kuhn

With the end of open source support for Spring Boot 2.7.x versions in November of this year, many organizations are looking into options that will give them additional time to upgrade their Spring Boot applications. Tanzu Spring Runtime is an excellent service that provides extended commercial support for Spring and its various subprojects. VMware is deeply committed to the Spring ecosystem and open source community, and to further strengthen it, VMware launched extended support for Spring in February of 2022.

Tanzu Spring Runtime is available for stand-alone purchase, as well as bundled within Tanzu Application Service and Azure Spring Apps Enterprise at no extra cost.

Peace of mind with extended Spring support

Tanzu Application Service, a modern application platform based on Cloud Foundry, is the best location for hosting Spring and Spring Boot-based applications. In addition to providing a mission-critical application runtime, Tanzu Application Service also includes additional Spring functionality with add-on services installed in the platform to enhance the developer productivity of the Spring ecosystem. These add-on services (i.e., Spring Cloud Services, Spring Cloud Data Flow, and Spring Cloud Gateway for Tanzu), are pivotal in orchestrating Spring microservices at scale for many enterprises.

Organizations using Tanzu Application Service can rest easy knowing they already have entitlement to Tanzu Spring Runtime via their existing license agreement. Additionally, developers running applications on Tanzu Application Service benefit from extended time to update their Spring and Spring Boot-based applications. At a minimum, they will receive an additional 12 months of support once their Spring projects' open source support period has ended. For example, for applications running on Spring Boot 2.7.x, developers have until February 18, 2025, to upgrade their applications, in comparison to the open source end-of-life date of November 18, 2023.

In addition to extended support timelines, developers also have direct and first-class access to experts from the Spring engineering team at VMware, from which they can obtain advice and assurance not only for Spring and Spring Boot-based questions, but also assistance on various Spring projects
