With the advent of HTTPS-everywhere, service meshes and zero trust infrastructure, we find that automated certificate management is more important than ever.
cert-manager aims to be easiest way to automatically manage certificates in Kubernetes clusters. And as a CNCF incubating project, it’s a really popular choice for that task, helping countless thousands of people to better handle certificates, which are truly critical infrastructure.
But even with cert-manager’s help, there’s still some work to ensure that everything is automated safely and that you don’t get caught out by a ticking TLS time-bomb down the road!
In this session, we’ll explore how (and why) cert-manager works, along with stepping into X.509 certificates, TLS and public key infrastructure (PKI) more broadly. We’ll also take a look at what the cert-manager project is doing to improve security and promote safe automation of other certificate-related tasks.
Ashley Davis (aka SgtCoDFish) is a cert-manager maintainer and a Senior Software Engineer at Jetstack by Venafi. Ashley has a background in TLS and applied public key cryptography and is keenly interested in using, building, and promoting open source solutions which we can all rely on to be as secure and stable as possible.
When not trying to encrypt the web, Ashley can usually be found watching sports (Let’s go Blue Jays!), cooking, or wandering through the hills of Lancashire!
Whitney is a full stack developer who enjoys understanding and using tools in the cloud native landscape. Creative and driven, Whitney recently pivoted from an art-related career to one in tech. She is active in the open source community, especially around CNCF projects focused on developer productivity. You can catch her lightboard streaming show ϟ Enlightning on Tanzu.TV. And not only does she rock at tech - she literally has toured playing in the band Mutual Benefit on keyboards and vocals.
