Provisioning and Managing Tanzu Kubernetes Clusters on vSphere 7 from VMware Tanzu Mission Control

We are excited to announce integration between Tanzu Mission Control and Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service, a component of vSphere 7 with Tanzu. With this integration, customers can centrally provision and manage the lifecycle of Tanzu Kubernetes clusters on vSphere 7 across multiple vCenter Server instances and/or multiple data centers via Tanzu Mission Control.

This integration extends Tanzu Mission Control capabilities beyond the support of Amazon AWS provisioning, providing a single point of control to manage the lifecycle of all clusters across both vSphere and Amazon AWS. Support for more environments, such as VMware Cloud on AWS and Azure, will come later. Customers can also attach and manage any conformant Kubernetes clusters (such as EKS and Openshift) running in other environments with Tanzu Mission Control. 

Use Tanzu Mission Control to manage Kubernetes at scale across clouds and teams

Tanzu Mission Control enables enterprises to achieve the consistency and governance they need to operate Kubernetes over a vast distributed estate. With Tanzu Mission Control, enterprises are able to gain global visibility over their entire Kubernetes footprint across environments, centralize access and identity management, apply consistent policies across clusters, inspect clusters for security and compliance risks, and centrally back up and restore clusters and namespaces.

As the number of Kubernetes clusters in enterprises keeps growing, managing those dispersed clusters is increasingly becoming a burden on IT organizations. Tanzu Mission Control was designed to make Kubernetes fleet management easy, providing a centralized management platform for operating and securing Kubernetes clusters and applications across clouds and teams.

vSphere 7 with Tanzu puts Kubernetes at the fingertips of millions of IT admins

Last year at VMworld, we announced Project Pacific, a ground-breaking rethinking of vSphere that deeply embeds Kubernetes into the platform. In October of this year, we released vSphere 7 with Tanzu, which enables our vast vSphere install base to start on their Kubernetes journey right away by leveraging the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service and their existing vSphere skills and knowledge.

Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service in vSphere 7 enables vSphere admins to get Kubernetes infrastructure on their existing vSphere environment up and running quickly. Customers can configure an enterprise-grade Kubernetes infrastructure that leverages existing networking and storage in as little as an hour. And IT admins can provide developers with self-service access to Kubernetes namespaces and clusters, allowing developers to integrate vSphere with Tanzu into their development processes and CI/CD pipelines.

Manage Tanzu Kubernetes clusters on vSphere 7 at scale with Tanzu Mission Control

With the introduction of vSphere 7 with Tanzu, we envision exponential growth in the number of Kubernetes clusters running on vSphere. Tanzu Mission Control, a dedicated Kubernetes management platform with rich management features, enables our customers to gain full control of their Kubernetes clusters. Whether running Tanzu Kubernetes clusters across multiple vCenter Server instances or multiple data centers, or across both on-prem environments and public clouds, Tanzu Mission Control provides the ability to ensure global governance and consistency for these dispersed Kubernetes clusters.

With the integration between Tanzu Mission Control and Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service in vSphere 7, customers can now provision, scale, and upgrade Tanzu Kubernetes clusters on vSphere 7 directly from the Tanzu Mission Control UI, API, and CLI. To enable the integration, platform operators will first need to register a Supervisor Cluster of vSphere 7 to Tanzu Mission Control. Doing so will allow them to fully utilize the centralized lifecycle management of Tanzu Kubernetes clusters. They can also leverage Tanzu Mission Control’s access policies to grant development teams access to their Tanzu Kubernetes clusters. By using Tanzu Mission Control’s cluster groups and access policies together, developers can get a kubeconfig via Tanzu Mission Control and directly access their clusters.

Tanzu Mission Control also enables platform teams to gain global visibility into the health and status of all their Tanzu Kubernetes clusters through its UI, CLI, and API, which eliminates the need to switch between different consoles and portals. The integration between Tanzu Mission Control and Tanzu Observability moreover allows users to easily drill down to a particular issue by leveraging the powerful analytic and diagnostic capabilities of Tanzu Observability.
