What to Watch: SpringOne Platform 2019

SpringOne Platform is fast approaching, and I, for one, can’t wait. The great and the good of the Spring world will be there, and the knowledge they share is invaluable. This year, attendees will note that the breadth and depth of the content goes wider and deeper than ever before, with themes covering every aspect of software production. The full list of sessions can be found online, but here’s my personal take on the top talks from each theme...

Process/Culture

My pick: "Distributed Agile Teams Dialed to 11"

Increasingly, companies are turning to remote working and distributed teams to help attract and retain development talent. As companies make the switch to remote working, they often discover that existing co-location biased practices and processes become less effective. How can you possibly practice pair programming and TDD with developers a 1000 miles away? In "Distributed Agile Teams Dialed to 11" with Joseph Moore, you’ll find out what works best from those who’ve done it.

Programming/Architecture

My pick: “Building Reactive Pipelines: How to Go from Scalable Apps to (Ridiculously) Scalable Systems”

Getting every last drop of processing performance from your code is very satisfying. But what do you do when you’ve reached the limit? Where can you go from there? Scale of course! This is why I can’t wait to hear what Mark Heckler has to say in his talk “Building Reactive Pipelines: How to Go from Scalable Apps to (Ridiculously) Scalable Systems”. With tips on both reactive and scalable architecture in a single talk, any time invested here will be hugely worthwhile.

Leadership

My Pick: “Success at Scale: It’s Hard, But Achievable”

Transformation is easy to say but hard to do. This is why “Success at Scale: It’s Hard, But Achievable” will be such a useful session. Katie, Aniruth, and Felicia have years of experience transforming enterprises. They’ve discovered what works (and what doesn’t) the hard way so the techniques they share here will be invaluable to transformers everywhere.

Platform

My Pick: “Deploy on Friday!”

Ever seen one of those tweets saying “don’t deploy on Fridays”? Sounds odd to me. How does stopping the delivery of software help with anything? If you’re unable to deploy on Fridays (or any other day of the week for that matter), then Lars Rosenquist’s talk “Deploy on Friday!” is undoubtedly the one to watch.

Wrapping up

These are my personal selections, and I’m confident you’ll find them useful. But what about you? What can’t you wait to see @s1p? Why not add your personal selections in the comments below?

SpringOne Platform will take place from 7-10 October in Austin, TX. You can reserve your ticket at springoneplatform.io (and you'll save $200 on the ticket price if you use the discount code S1P200_EMEA).
