Five Can’t Miss Practitioner Sessions at Cloud Foundry Summit 2017

June 7, 2017 Jeff Kelly

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes get overwhelmed when I attend technology conferences. This tends to happen at the better shows, where there are so many great break out sessions and panel discussions that it’s hard to choose which to attend. Next week I’m heading to Cloud Foundry Summit in Santa Clara, which definitely qualifies as one of the better (if not the best!) technology shows of the year. And there are indeed tons of great sessions to choose from.

In an attempt to make the most of my week, I spent some time checking out the session catalogue in advance. I was happy to see there are a number of sessions by Cloud Foundry practitioners covering their real world experiences developing cloud-native applications. Personally, I find practitioner-led sessions to be among the best at any given show. They all look great, but I found five session that I’m particularly excited to attend. If you’re heading to Cloud Foundry Summit next week, you might want to get to these sessions early if you want a seat. I’m predicting standing-room only. All of these sessions are part of the Cloud Foundry in the Enterprise track and take place in Grand Ballroom GH at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Without further ado (and in chronological order) ...

What: Humana - Scaling Cloud Foundry From One Team to The Entire Enterprise

When: Wednesday, June 14 at 3:05pm PT

It’s one thing for a single team to adopt DevOps. It’s quite another to spread DevOps to all corners of a large enterprise.  And it’s much more than a technology or even process challenge. Getting everyone on board with DevOps sometimes requires a hearts and minds campaign. Humana’s Patrick Huber, along with my Pivotal colleague Parag Joshi, will share lessons learned from his efforts doing just that at one of the largest health insurance providers in the U.S. Huber and Joshi will also talk about what it takes to roll out and scale an enterprise resilient Cloud Foundry offering. What: HIPAA Solutions on Cloud Foundry

When: Wednesday, June 14 at 4:45pm PT

Healthcare in America is just begging for innovation, but innovation is challenging in heavily regulated environments. That isn’t stopping Cardinal Health. In this session, Cardinal Health’s Jim Shingler, along with Pivotal’s Ralph Meira, will illustrate how the company operates Cloud Foundry and builds compelling cloud-native software while simultaneously complying with the rigorous requirements of the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. What: Transforming for ‘10 bai’ - Big Challenges at Yahoo! Japan to be The Cloud-Native Enterprise

When: Wednesday, June 14 at 5:25pm PT

Yahoo! Japan may not be a household name in the U.S., but it is a giant in its home country. How big? Yahoo Japan provides users over 100 services with 90 million unique browsers per day and 69.8 billion page views per month. Yusuke Kondo and Yasuhiko Kubono will talk about Yahoo! Japan's decision to adopt Cloud Foundry to support its massive application footprint and some of the organizational changes the company made during its transition to cloud-native. What: Zero to 12 Million at T-Mobile

When: Thursday, June 15 at 11:30am PT

When T-Mobile decides to act, they don’t waste any time. After deciding to deploy Cloud Foundry, it took just three months before the platform was operational and supporting a number of the company’s mission critical applications. This includes one application that receives 12 million daily calls! How did T-Mobile move so fast? Find out in this session with T-Mobile’s Melissa Chapman and Brendan Aye. The session will focus on some of the challenges the company encountered and how it overcame them with lightning speed. Add this session to your calendar here.

What: Extreme Ops: Platform Operations at The Home Depot

When: Thursday, June 15 at 2:30pm PT

You probably think of The Home Depot as the home improvement super store. And it is. But did you know it’s also leading the digital transformation charge in retail? The company has over 1,800 developers building modern software using modern methodologies all running on Cloud Foundry. How does the company’s IT team keep Cloud Foundry running smoothly supporting such a large and active group of developers? In this session, The Home Depot’s Kevin Igarashi-Ball will tell attendees “how a customer-focused operations team uses Extreme Programming principles and a product, not infrastructure, approach to foster a thriving development community.” Add this session to your calendar here.
