Building For The Future; Recapping Cloud Foundry Summit 2019

April 5, 2019 Pivotal Team

Cloud Foundry Summit North America 2019 is officially in the books, and as we leave Philly, one thing is clear: building software with empathy, harnessing the power of industrialized open source, and building software that your developers love are all hallmarks of the modern business.

With these things in mind, we were excited to launch the following products at the summit: Pivotal Cloud Foundry 2.5, which harnesses the power of Istio and Envoy to increase developer productivity, and Cloud-Native Buildpacks, our collaboration with Heroku to enable as many developers as possible with the power of buildpacks.

Cloud Foundry Summit let us hear from thought leaders like Denise Yu on why thinking about who your end-user is matters, or from Nasdaq's Bhavani Yellapragada on why Pivotal is the perfect strategic partner for their digital transformation journey, or from DICK'S Sporting Goods' Jay Piskorik on why building great software was one of the most important initiatives they've taken on, or from   from industry leaders like Comcast on why the mix of culture and software is what truly makes for a successful organization.

Check out the highlights below:

Day 1: "We Need to Be Kayakers, not Caterpillers"

This year's Cloud Foundry Summit 2019 started with Abby Kearns, Executive Director of the Cloud Foundry Foundation, where she explained why approaching Digital Transformation as a kayaker—someone who fails fast, is more responsive, and innovates more—is the key to a successful journey.

Pivot Dieu Cao then live-demoed new Cloud Foundry features.

Pivot Denise Yu then sat down with Kearns to touch on an oft-forgotten component of building software—empathy and understanding.

Philly native Comcast, then took the stage for a panel on why they aren't just a telecoms operation company and how Pivotal helped them get there.

Finally we announced Pivotal Cloud Foundry 2.5, which allows weighted routing to use Istio and Envoy to simplify blue-green deployments and more. Get the full breakdown of all of the new features with this release here

Day 2: "Buildpacks For All"

Day 2 of Cloud Foundry Summit 2019 started with a bang as we announced Cloud Native Buildpacks. We teamed up with Heroku to help you unlock developer productivity and bring the power of buildpacks to Kubernetes. Learn more about Cloud Native Buildpacks here

We then heard from Doug Coleman of Charles Schwab, where he discussed where Schwab is today, and where they plan to go.

Other great stories from Day 2 included the Pivotal Cloud Foundry impact for Nasdaq; a great discussion on Reliability Engineering, and more:

Day 3: Looking Forward

We wrapped up Cloud Foundry Summit 2019 by hearing from Jay Piskorik of DICK'S Sporting Goods and other industry leaders on how and why they're transforming their respective organizations.
