Whatever the future of journalism may be, data will play a key role. In recent years, the data journalist has rose to prominence in the newsroom. Contemporary journalism has a lot more to do with hacking code and munging data than furiously scribbling in notebooks. This is a transition news organizations are still adjusting to, one incubated in part by the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews Fellowship program.
The OpenNews Fellowship places developers, technologists, and data scientists into newsrooms around the world to develop innovative apps and use data as a primary source in news reporting. The 2011/12 Fellows were placed into major news organizations including BBC, the Guardian, Zeit Online, Al Jazeera English, and the Boston Globe.
