The OpenNews Fellowship Calls Data Scientists to Help Build the Newsroom of the Future

August 6, 2012 Paul M. Davis

Whatever the future of journalism may be, data will play a key role. In recent years, the data journalist has rose to prominence in the newsroom. Contemporary journalism has a lot more to do with hacking code and munging data than furiously scribbling in notebooks. This is a transition news organizations are still adjusting to, one incubated in part by the Knight-Mozilla OpenNews Fellowship program.

The OpenNews Fellowship places developers, technologists, and data scientists into newsrooms around the world to develop innovative apps and use data as a primary source in news reporting. The 2011/12 Fellows were placed into major news organizations including BBC, the Guardian, Zeit Online, Al Jazeera English, and the Boston Globe. Their reflections on the experience can be read at OpenNews project leader Dan Sinker’s blog.

Are you a data scientist looking for an opportunity to help define the future of news, using data to reveal unseen truths in fast-paced newsrooms? You’ve got until this Saturday, August 11, to apply for the 2013 Fellowship program.
