VMware Tanzu Service Mesh Named a Leader in 2023 GigaOm Radar Report on Service Mesh

September 13, 2023 Darin Zook

GigaOm has once again placed VMware Tanzu Service Mesh within the leader ring of its Radar Report on Service Mesh. This year Tanzu Service Mesh has been upgraded to the Outperformer label, moving closer to the center and marking its heightened recognition as an industry leader. This is not only a testament to our robust enterprise capabilities and broad support for various application platforms, public clouds, and runtime environments, but also a validation of our strategic approach.

As enterprises embrace microservices and cloud native architectures, service meshes provide DevOps teams with a powerful tool to seamlessly orchestrate connectivity and security services across multi-cloud environments. With a common abstraction layer for application services, service meshes enable true application resiliency, observability, and security, regardless of whether applications are deployed in a single or multi-cloud environment. This critical capability empowers organizations to deliver consistent and powerful experiences, ensuring they remain competitive in today's fast-paced digital landscape.

The GigaOm Radar for Service Mesh shows Tanzu Service Mesh firmly in the leader ring and further toward the middle, marking its heightened recognition as an industry leader.

Industry leadership recognition

The recognition as a leader in the industry and an outperformer in the market should come as no surprise to our customers. The secret to unlocking the full potential of modern applications using Tanzu Service Mesh lies in abstracting the application layer from the infrastructure layer through the global namespace (GNS). This abstraction empowers developers, operations, and security teams with consistent policy controls and operational visibility across single and multi-cloud environments. By integrating applications to a GNS, platform engineers can leverage a suite of powerful capabilities, including microservice and API discovery, global identity and certificate management, advanced traffic routing, resiliency, and security policies, as well as deep visibility and analytics for all application-level communications.

The fact that GigaOm has recognized VMware as a leader in its report is a testament to the industry's acceptance of our open source approach for connecting and securing modern applications. This endorsement underscores the value of Tanzu Service Mesh in helping organizations deliver consistent and powerful experiences, remaining competitive in the digital landscape.

The placement towards the center of their radar recognizes our innovation and maturity as well as spotlights the forward-thinking integration strategy VMware embodies. This was further demonstrated in the unveiling of the expanded Tanzu Application Platform at this year's VMware Explore event which highlighted our holistic approach to enterprise solutions and multi-cloud management. GigaOm recognized that VMware Tanzu Service Mesh is more than a standalone development—it's an integral piece of our broader strategy, meshing seamlessly with the modern platforms and cloud management through the overarching Tanzu Hub cloud management suite. Combined with our unique ability to support any cloud, any Kubernetes, and any application, GigaOm's report confirms our position at the forefront of strategic service mesh use, emphasizing our commitment to delivering agility, security, and consistent innovation.
