Delivering VMware Tanzu CloudHealth Cost Optimization Capabilities in VMware Tanzu Hub

November 7, 2023 Dan Naparstek

VMware Tanzu Hub is an application delivery and multi-cloud management platform that offers users visibility, governance, and actionable insights into their public cloud and Kubernetes environments. Powered by a cloud-scale, graph database technology, Tanzu Hub provides you with views and controls across your environment and gives your teams the ability to collaborate with a common understanding of resources, their relationships, and a history of their changes.

As announced at VMware Explore Las Vegas, Tanzu Hub will serve as the common platform across the Tanzu portfolio, allowing customers to accelerate their application delivery by developing, operating, and optimizing with VMware Tanzu.

Today, we are excited to announce the first set of Tanzu CloudHealth features that will be available in VMware Tanzu Hub for enabled customers, including Cost History Report, rightsizing recommendations, anomaly detection, and a brand-new Cloud Smart Summary. These features will initially be available for Amazon Web Services (AWS) only, with additional clouds coming soon. For more details on each, read on!

Cost History Report

With the Tanzu CloudHealth Cost History Report in Tanzu Hub, you will be able to see a detailed view of up to 13 months of cloud spend. Costs for each service will be displayed as stacked bars on a per month basis, which can be filtered to show only costs for certain services or direct/indirect charges. The report will include helpful summaries of your previous month cost, current month cost, year-to-date cost, and your top AWS service by cost. Costs will also be shown in a tabular view so you will easily be able to view cost data per service.

Rightsizing recommendations

Cloud environments often undergo rapid changes based on the needs of your business, and the over-provisioning or underutilization of cloud resources can quickly lead to wasted spending. Additionally, organizations using manual methods across their environments will find it overwhelming to tackle rightsizing challenges, especially as cloud usage grows and multi-cloud strategies are more frequently adopted. Tanzu CloudHealth rightsizing recommendations in Tanzu Hub will make it easy to quickly identify infrastructure that should be upgraded, downgraded, or terminated based on utilization and performance metrics, and your desired ranges for both. These recommendations will enable you to take action to avoid wasted spending and optimize your cloud usage and costs. Rightsizing recommendations within Tanzu Hub will be available for Amazon services such as Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Elastic Block Store (EBS), and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). Support for additional services will be added in the future.

Anomaly detection

Unexpected changes in cloud spend can cause major budget management issues and lead to difficult conversations with key stakeholders. Unusual spending activities are commonly referred to as anomalies, and anomaly detection is intended to catch that event as soon as it occurs. Backed by machine learning algorithms, anomaly detection will provide much needed visibility into unusual or unexpected spend within your cloud environment, allowing you to quickly identify the root cause and take corrective action before the anomaly turns into a negative trend. In Tanzu Hub, you’ll be able to explore resources with anomalies  further to understand relationships and dependencies, providing the full context in your environment.

Cloud Smart Summary

The Cloud Smart Summary in Tanzu Hub will be a concise summary of what is driving your cloud spend, along with suggestions you can follow to further optimize your costs. The summary of cloud spend will include easy-to-read details on changes that are happening to a certain resource, why these changes are happening, and how it affects your overall spend. Additionally, for each item summarized, suggestions and insights from Intelligent Assist will be offered for further action. Intelligent Assist then will help users navigate directly to the relevant pages in the Tanzu Hub UI where more context is available.
