sfeatured-ambari-horton-pivotalPivotal continues to make quick progress on our mission to make our industry leading Big Data Suite products more accessible and usable across the Apache Hadoop ecosystem. Building on February’s announcements around the Open Data Platform initiative, where Pivotal and Hortonworks along with other big data visionaries, partnered to create a common commercial core of Apache Hadoop® projects, Pivotal and Hortonworks announced today that Pivotal HAWQ, the SQL on Hadoop query engine that speeds up big data queries by up to 1000x, is available on Hortonworks Data Platform.

Pivotal HAWQ: The Killer App for Apache Hadoop

As the world’s appetite for big data continues to grow, the pressure to get real time insights from HDFS using existing enterprise investments and skillsets in SQL is increasing rapidly.

Originally developed from Pivotal Greenplum Database, Pivotal HAWQ has been extended to work on Apache Hadoop workloads. With full SQL compliance for analytical workloads and proven support for extreme scale, it is the ‘killer app’ that companies are looking for to unlock real-time insights from their Hadoop investments.

Pivotal HAWQ on Hortonworks HDP

As the next step toward executing on the Open Data Platform initiative, the latest release of Pivotal HAWQ, version 1.3 can now be used over Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP), affording enterprises greater flexibility in their Hadoop deployments and faster time to insights.

This news is of particular interest to Pivotal Big Data Suite users who will now have the option of using Pivotal HD or HDP, as Pivotal HAWQ will now work on both distributions. This is also of interest to enterprises currently investing in HDP but also looking for a strong SQL engine to build their analytics use cases, offload tasks from traditional Enterprise Data Warehouses and execute them at Hadoop scale.

Support for Apache Ambari, the Hadoop-native Management Framework

Our new version of Pivotal HAWQ uses Apache Ambari with the appropriate plug-in for configuration and management of HAWQ. In fact, HAWQ appears like a Hadoop service inside of Apache Ambari. This enables Apache Ambari to manage the complete solution consisting of Hadoop components and HAWQ using one portal and interface. It is also in contrast to other proprietary management interfaces for SQL on Hadoop in the market today that result in “swivel chair management” of the Hadoop components and the SQL engine due to disjointed management portals and interfaces.

If you zoom out to the larger picture, this new release of HAWQ is about minimizing the burdens of integration, configuration and management of the big data stack so that enterprises can focus on solving the business problem at hand as opposed to the integration problem at hand.
