sfeatured-PCFAcross retail, insurance, banking, government, heavy industrial, auto manufacturing, and more, Pivotal customers are transforming their development cultures and technology stacks to maintain competitive advantage in the software-driven world. Across successful technology organizations, we’ve observed three consistent and foundational patterns emerging. They build their apps using microservices as the most flexible architectural design pattern. They recognize agility cannot be achieved without Continuous Delivery. And, they employ DevOps practices, such as shared responsibility and short iterations.

“With Pivotal we have minimized our innovation cycles and can now respond to changing market demands faster than ever before, both of which allowed us to develop a profound software culture in our transformational journey into a digital company.”– Christoph Hartung, Head of Connected Cars, Mercedes-Benz

The latest release of Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF) brings together these existential principles of modern Cloud Native software development into a turnkey platform. It’s never been easier for enterprise teams to convert to Cloud Native patterns for development, testing, and operations. PCF 1.6 delivers an array of capabilities including:

  • Powerful new microservices implementations using Spring Cloud Services
  • Expanded language support with .NET and Docker images
  • Fully integrated tooling to support agile development and continuous delivery with Pivotal Tracker, Cloudbees Jenkins, GitLab, and Jfrog Artifactory

Introducing Spring Cloud Services (SCS)

Without continuous delivery and operational resilience, microservices create new operational problems while solving delivery problems. With integrated health management, logging, and auto-scaling, Pivotal Cloud Foundry has always been a good place to run microservices.

Today, with the launch of Spring Cloud Services (SCS), we’ve made PCF the best platform to run microservices applications. Spring Cloud Services provides the first and only secure, enterprise-ready distribution of core NetflixOSS and Spring Cloud components, specifically geared toward providing proper architectural scaffolding for microservices applications. SCS 1.0 operationalizes these components as managed services within PCF, including a configuration server, service registry, and circuit breaker dashboard service.

Support For .NET And Docker

For many of our customers, heterogeneous architectures are a reality. Each operating system comes with tools and practices that require unique expertise. With PCF 1.6, we are solving this challenge by orchestrating the application lifecycle of .NET apps in the same way that we’ve always done for Java, Ruby, Go, Node.js and PHP. PCF 1.6 supports .NET applications by bringing our container orchestration to the Windows Server Operating System. As a result, deploying a .NET application, binding a database, or scaling the app uses the exact same APIs as other languages.

Also introduced in this release is similar support for Docker applications. Now in beta, native Docker image support allows customers to deploy applications to PCF as Docker images from Docker Hub, a secure public registry.

“Having engaged closely with Pivotal Labs to build and operate new applications on Pivotal Cloud Foundry, Humana continues to focus on building innovative customer experiences for the next generation of healthcare. With this Pivotal Cloud Foundry update, we are excited by the prospect of seamlessly extending our use of Pivotal Cloud Foundry to also operate mission-critical .NET enterprise workloads.” – Antonio Melo, digital experience center director, Humana

Growing Partner Ecosystem Improves Application Lifecycle

Tools to automate delivery pipelines are critical to achieve true agility. PCF 1.6 embeds three of the most popular continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools directly into the platform, providing all the building blocks of a modern application delivery toolchain. With PCF 1.6, customers can integrate platform-managed versions of GitLab source code repository, CloudBees Jenkins continuous integration, and JFrog Artifactory binary artifact management in order to build and deploy microservices and cloud native applications with confidence and speed.

Beyond the core features in PCF 1.6, our rapidly growing partner ecosystem is taking notice of Pivotal’s momentum and contributing exciting integrations:

  • Microsoft announced availability of the BOSH Cloud Provider Interface (CPI) for Azure
  • Tibco announced the launch of their Business Works product for Pivotal Cloud Foundry
  • Apigee announced our collaboration to integrate their Edge API management product

The Road Ahead

Looking ahead, we are focused on bringing more sophistication to application lifecycle management by introducing the ability to collect, analyze, and act on real time data about your applications. We expect this will significantly improve the way you introduce changes to your applications and make it safer to practice continuous delivery.

Exciting times are ahead. Stay tuned.
