Now Open: Pivotal Big Data Center Of Excellence In Denver

November 9, 2015 Nick Cayou

sfeatured-Denver-OfficeOpeningTo better collaborate with and develop best of breed solutions, Pivotal launched a new Pivotal Big Data Platform Center of Excellence (COE) in Denver, Colorado in October. Recognizing the need for our customers to have choice and confidence in the hardware platforms they deploy Pivotal Big Data Suite on, we have decided to invest more heavily in this area and put some deeper “Big Data” roots down in the Mile High City. We have a rapidly growing team that started with five engineers, and we are looking for the right candidates to help scale our efforts.

The Need For Platform Engineering

image01Thousands of enterprise customers across nearly every industry leverage our Big Data Suite products around the world, and there is a fast-growing need to develop rigorous test processes and reference architectures with every one of our partners’ hardware platforms. This effort ensures that our joint customers can deploy Pivotal’s data solutions with reduced risk and faster time to value. Our Denver-based team will focus on delivering these assets to our customers and partners.

Why Denver—Pivotal Labs And R&D Talent

image02Home of the Denver Broncos, the Rocky Mountains, amazing skiing and a plethora of craft breweries, Colorado is also one of the fastest growing technology hubs in the United States. Pivotal Labs launched a new Denver office in May of 2015 to meet the growing demand for our agile development services, and the site has grown to host many of R&D functions for Pivotal Cloud Foundry®.

As we looked for a site to host our new team, Denver became the logical choice. The Denver/Boulder corridor has a rich history of innovation in the storage and server market with legendary companies like Sun Microsystems, StorageTek, McDATA, HP, IBM and others calling the area home at one point or another. Because of this, there is an established and large R&D community in the area. Locating our COE operations in Denver in proximity to the talent pool was an important element of our decision process.

The Federation Angle

image00While the Big Data COE will focus on a number of ecosystem partners in the hardware and software space, the initial focus of the team will be on expanding our offerings with EMC. Pivotal and EMC enjoy a long history of bringing innovative Big Data Solutions to market—like the EMC Federation Big Data Lake. The COE backlog of solutions testing will focus on EMC’s Data Computing Appliance, Isilon Scale out NAS, and emerging EMC technologies like DSSD, XtremIO, ECS and ScaleIO.

The Approach

The Big Data COE will follow Pivotal’s open approach to co-innovating with our customers and partners while adhering to agile development practices. Daily standups, test driven development and pairing are all embedded features of the COE. More important than each specific activity, our overall approach delivers business outcomes for some of the best product design companies and brands in the world. Like our customers, partners will find that our approach is extremely agile and able to help them get to market much faster and with higher quality results.
