Going on a product hunt: Plastic Card

October 18, 2014 Addison Huddy

If you haven’t caught the other posts in this series, recently the Labs PM’s have been trying a bit of an experiment: we critique products on Product Hunt over lunch. We have started to refer to these exercises as “product hunts.” For 60 minutes, we dissect the product, business model, and technology, and throw our thoughts on mural to post here.

On this week’s product hunt, the PM team reviewed the recently launched Plastic Card, a competitor to Coin that has an integrated EMV chip and display. The chip will likely give this product legs as it will comply with many of the 2015 card regulations that have been in response to multiple merchant security breaches.

The biggest question the team has about these type of cards is “how much pain does a user feel today around their credit cards?” In other words, “is the solution significantly better than the status quo?”

So many products have had superior technology and implementation, but only a slightly better user experience. To address this question, we spent the majority of the hour working on an empathy map that helped us better understand the current pain-points of a credit card user.

Check out our thoughts in the mural below.

Thanks to this week’s PM hunters this week: @rheakaw, @addisonhuddy, @kirkhendrickson, @gregoehmen, @lcddave, and @gentschev

Until the next hunt.
