Cloud Foundry, the Platform as a Service (PaaS) solution offered by EMC’s newly-minted Pivotal Initiative, opened itself this week to clients and the open source community. The Pivotal Initiative will be selling Cloud Foundry as a cloud software service, while opening the project’s code for collaboration and commits through Github.

Enterprise customers will get access to, and support for, a robust cloud platform for agile software development. Meanwhile, Cloud Foundry has underscored its commitment to the open source community by making the underlying code available. A recent post on the Cloud Foundry blog explains the thinking behind this decision and calls for outside commits:

Adding full-time external committers has always been a goal of the team, and we are engaged with several organizations about putting dedicated resources on the extended engineering team –we believe this to be a very important step forward. The scale of these external investments is significant and a major milestone in our growth. The heart of Cloud Foundry, however, really comes from individual community contributions and users, so of course, we invite you to join us.

Some expressed concern that Cloud Foundry’s status as a Pivotal Initiative product would result in it becoming a proprietary platform. This week’s announcement emphasizes that the company is committed to threading the needle between offering Enterprises a powerful and stable cloud service and support, while remaining sufficiently open to tap the contributions of the developer community and enrich the open source codebase.
